Turned down for A&L Premier Direct Current Account - what do I do now?

I have an OD of £2K which I have no chance of paying off for a long time to come (about £18K of credit card debt).

I have just been turned down for an Alliance & Leicester Premier Direct Current Account, which offers 0% interest on an OD for 1 year.

My question is, based on the fact I have just been turned down for the A&L current account, will I be accepted for a credit card with a 0% BT interest / low life of the balance card? (I am currently paying a £7 a month charge for my current account plus £25 interest per month).

If not, what other current account can I get that is cheaper than the one I have now (Lloyds TSB select account)?

  • Don't think that you will get an account much better.

I don't know the position you are in but how about trying to get some extra income, an additional job, super market work or perhaps even helping people out, gardening etc.
  • The A&L Premier Current Account only offers a matching overdraft limit to your existing current account if in the past few months you have been in credit, otherwise you will get the default £450 overdraft limit so it doesn't seem as if this account would have been right for you anyhow.

We were initially turned down in June this year but I wrote and appealed and we were accepted. It is worth phoning them and seeing if you can do this.

  • You could try appealing the decision, but given that you have £20K worth of debt I can't see them giving you an account. Are all your payments etc up to date? As this will be taken into consideration, when they come to any decision.

I think you should thank A and L for saving you future problems. I have had an account for about a year, and they do make mistakes more often than other banks. And when you have so much debt, a missed payment (not your fault) can trigger penalties and all sorts of trouble.

I suggest that in the first instance you look for a bank that is reliable. And no-one is going to give you 2,000 pounds interest-free (the A and L offer only went up to 1,000, and then only if you used their switching service, and their switching service makes so many mistakes that it would have been a disaster for you). Check out First Direct and Smile, because they usually get things right.
