Moving Abroad Debt & Debt Recovery

Hey,

Right. Basically I'm moving abroad as I got offered a better job which will give me over 10k extra a year in salary. However, I have a number of debts in the UK still standing. I have cleared about £2k over the past year but I just got questions on the debts. I would like to get everything boxed off and paid while I am abroad. I will have more disposable income as I will be living with my partners family.
a) If I am abroad can they progress any legal action against me when I notify them I have moved and no longer in the country.
b) Further to this can they transfer the debt to another EU country (Finland)
If I offer LloydsTSB a set amount a month, say £150 a month do you think its likely to keep them quiet.

c) Do I actually have any UK debt liability when abroad.

I have maybe the following that I am aware of left:
Lloyds TSB: £2,300
Council Tax: £300 (i can clear this over next 2 month)
Old Payday loan £100 (Will clear this month)

Sorry if I'm a bit confusing but just trying to get my head around best way to approach it all

hmm not sure - not sure what uk arrangements are like with the Finish authorities. Trouble is though if you ever came back they could be waiting for you.
You might want to tie everything up before you move abroad so if you ever did need to come back you could. Also it could cause problems in terms of Visa's if you wanted to travel etc.
Can you make arrangements to pay the Lloyds debt or perhaps you could make them a settlement offer if the debt is very old before you go?

I have responded to your council tax query on your other post.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    a) yes - they just have to prove they sent the papers to your last known address, not that you recieved them...
    b) pass...
    c) well yes... in the UK and some countries do check your financial situation before granting a visa - or at least they used to.

You are about to get a £10k pay rise, you'll be living nearly FOC and you are only wanting to offer £150 to your creditor? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to pay as much as you can to them to get this paid off so it's not hanging over you any more? Unless you are planning on staying abroad for 6+ years of course...

    Thanks for your replies.

The country I'm moving to is EU, so dont need visas.

But yeah I thought £150 a month then I can afford it over this month and next month until I start getting salary from my new job, then I will know what I need to pay abroad and can overpay and get all my debts settled in the UK as soon as possible. I would prefer being abroad and knowing that everything is settled in the UK and I have no debts standing.

Whats the best way of checking anything else that I owe? just going through my credit report to see what is listed as outstanding or in default?
