Tesco TV problem.

Options
Hello, can any one clarify my legal rights on the following issue.
I purchased a tv from tesco and after a week or two it has started turning itself off. This has been going on since april. I have contacted the electrical help line who say i must have it seen to by their repairers.
Firstly, i dont feel good about having it repaired as it is a new TV, after the repair it seems it is damaged goods.I dont want a "repaired " TV.If it went faulty so quick what is it going to be like in a year or two.
Surely Tesco should replace or refund me. I quoted sales of goods act that products must be of good quality and the lady said they are within their rights to send it for repair. Is that right?
Secondly, i can not get time off work during the week and the repairers only visit mon-fri. Why should i have to take a day off work unpaid to sort this out? I asked if i could drop the tv off at the store but they wont have this.
Any help much appreciated.

Is the tv the UMC 40inch ? If it is if you go into settings and scroll down till you find "auto power" or summatt like that you can choose "never turn off" and that will solve the problem, we have this tv and we kept getting a window popping up after about 4 hours of tv being on saying the tv will turn off in ???? seconds unless you press a key on the remote control, it was really annoying but after doing the above its fine now.
Apologies if this isnt your tv model and hope your problem is solved quickly

    Stand up for yourself
Today we returned a faulty camera, purchased in February at Tesco Wrexham, expecting the usual replace, refund or repair policy. On reaching the counter we were told "It's over 28 days old, have you rung the helpline?" In store we tried the helpline whic...h automatically tries to divert to the manufacturer, which at 7pm of course was not available. The store then told us nothing could be done until Monday and we would have to ring again. THIS IS NOT CORRECT. DO NOT ACCEPT IT. THE SALE OF GOODS ACT STATES THAT THE CONTRACT IS WITH THE RETAILER AND THE RESPONSIBILITY LIES WITH THEM TO ENSURE THAT THE FAULTY PRODUCT IS REPAIRED, REPLACED OR REFUNDED. It is then up to the store to deal with the manufacturer. We stood our ground and the Duty Manager finally refunded as there was no suitable equivalent replacement at the same price, but it took us over an hour. If the store had had their way we would have had to take time out of work and probably wait for the manufacturer to mess about with repairing the product. This page therefore is to encourage you to stand up for your statutory rights and don't be fobbed off by staff who do not know the law or else do know, but think it's ok to ignore it.

Hi, different retailers have different policies but when I worked in tv servicing it was a case that after 28 days the tv had to be sent to be checked/repaired.

During the first month the retailer could send the tv back to the retailer without question , after the month if the tv was exchanged or refunded the retailer had a second hand that had to be sold as an 'ex-demo or managers special'.

It does seen fair that the tv should be checked out for physical damage before refunding or exchanging plus a lot of 'faults' turn out to be that the customer hasn't the time and can't bebothered to read the instruction book but have the time to drive back to the shop and start demanding and quite often return the equipment without the original packaging as required by the manufacturer.

How long is it before it turns itself off? As the above poster says, but not only for that TV, modern TVs (and satellite and freeview obxes) have to be able to turn themselves off automatically - it's a "green" thing. Have you checked the settings to see if you can change that part of the set-up, or to see if it is that?

    thanks for the replys.
It is not turning itself off to save energy, its definately a fault. Its a random thing and when it happens it kind of makes a pop, then shuts down, not the normal energy saving mode. And I am no way a technophobe, i love my gadgets and am sure this is a faulty tv.
And yes i do read manuals (though this does`nt come with a paper one- its an electronic guide on the options list- sony bravia tv)

They do have the right to insist on a repair.

At least, look at it this way -- after a repair, it's not 'damaged goods' it's a working TV. It's not like they're just sewing a patch onto it. If it's switching itself off, they'll probably just replace the main PCB completely, swapping out your busted one for a new one. In fact, in that respect, your TV will be newer than when you bought it.

Of course, you'll still have a Technica TV, so it's not all good news.
