I think you only have to search on here to realise that they should not be touched with a barge pole.
  • No.

They are carp & so are their operating procedures in house from top to bottom I believe.

Have them as part of insuarance package on a flat I rent. Only had to use them three times. Depends entirely on who you get on the other end of the phone when you need them. Had helpful and prompt service from them and useless too. Not a total waste of time and money but can drive you nuts if put through to a moron.

We used them and called them out a couple of times over the past few years to sort out our infamous Potterton boiler. Got the problem fixed each time with replacement of otherwise expensive parts for nothing (monthly premium aside of course). No real complaints on the work front, had one useless 'Engineer' who said the problem was sorted and it wasn't, but was put right within a couple of days by another.

There was a slight issue where they couldn't/wouldn't (never got to the bottom of it) send someone out over the weekend in the depths of last winter when we had no heating and 2 newborn twins in the house.

We ended up moving to AA as the Homeserve prices kept creeping up and we got more cover from the AA for less money (and Quidco cashback to signing up!).

Do not, do not, do not go with Homeserve.

Terrible service - The boiler was left worse off than when they started after their annual service, and they've missed three boiler repair appointments in a row after that.

No hot water / heating for four days is not fun. Taking days off work to be in for their engineers is not fun. Customer service not interested. Worst experience I've ever had from a company in terms of totally dropping the ball. Go with someone else. Doesn't matter if Homeserve are cheaper (the only reason I signed up with them, and the Quidco)... it's just not worth the hassle.

Most of the incidents you mention are not 'common emergencies'. Boiler cover is probably the only one worth having, and even that is debatable, depending on the age/reliability of your boiler. For example, 'roof damage' would already be covered by your standard buildings insurance.
You might as well add cover against being hit by a meteorite if you insure against that lot, as you're more likely to benefit from it.

None of the things on your list are common home emergencies. Obviously they can occur but by no means can be called common. If fact most of them could better be called very rare.
We used to have cover for CH but the only time we had a failure they could not find anyone who might be available on a Sunday. We were not very impressed with them. At least BG make an effort to get there quickly.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
