People on this site are always going on about DDs as if they are a panacea. It's true there are threads from people who "forgot" a payment and a DD might have prevented a missed payment charge. However a forgotten payment results in one charge, a DD gone wrong often results in two or three charges. (Eg if you forget to have available funds.)

For every thread where a DD might have saved someone, there are even more threads such as this.

DD's are just not worth the hassle IMHO and I won't sign them. They date back to an age of paper/batch processing. All this nonsense about the "payment being called for" a few days in advance, lists being produced and you can't cancel within a few days of the due date because the institutions can't deal with it. All a nonsense in the modern world.

I'm afraid, OP, you are probably on the hook for the failed DD with respect to MBNA . The rest seem like nonsense.

Also bear in mind that ALL penalty-type charges are limited to the cost to the company of the breach concerned. £12 has become a de-facto standard charge because some time ago the OFT said they would presume unfairness for charges higher than this. But the law is they can only charge what it cost them. So - in addition to disputing the other charges on the basis they were not justified, I would challenge them to prove how the bounced DD cost them £12 and remark that whatever it cost them, it is much less than what their mess-up has cost you in aggravation. Suggest both sides call it quit and if don't send a subsantive reply to correspondence then this failure will also form part of your complaint to the FOS.

    Good luck!
