I took note of everyone's experiences and advice (particularly you elsien as I didn't want to have to replace the whole bathroom) and washed it in the bath.
I vacuumed it first with my miele cat and dog on the highest setting so thought I got most of the muck out but it looked like someone had pooped in the bath - even on the 3rd rinse. I washed it with bio washing powder and on the final rinse added mistral odor fresh to the water and then left it in the bath over night. It was in the bath for a day and half drying out and then transferred to the washing line once it was light enough to carry (thanks vax2002).
It now smells ok but still not amazing so I might go down the powerwashing route. I don't want to buy a carpet washer as when I move house I don't plan to have any carpets.
Thanks to everyone for their advice, life smells sweeter all round now!

I have some very good ideas regarding your problem. we also suffer from the same problem we used baking soda for this purpose believe me smell was gone. I would also recommend you take a look for fresh wave and apple cider vinegar. I hope it will work for you...
