Is there any providers that do discounted pre paayment meters?? I have one purely for convenince, due to past BR and other problems.

We currently have Eon, but just wondered if there was any way of getting a better deal?

I have just moved into a rented property that has meters for gas + elec installed & with british gas. I was looking aroud today & read about Ebico, their tarrifs look pretty good to me, would anyone recommend?

Ebico is excellent if you are a low energy user as it doesn't charge any daily connection fee. You only pay for the power you use. It is also the ONLY provider that doesn't charge extra for pre-payment. IMHO if you have a pre-pay meter you should be on Ebico.

The likes of BG can mislead customers by saying that they provide the cheapest gas & electricity but they don't tell you about:

    a. the very high daily standing charge

    b. the first so many KWhs are very expensive and THEN it gets cheaper so overall it's very expensive unless you use huge amounts of power and use much more of the cheaper units

Personally anyone on BG or Scottish Power deserve everything they get, they either waste stupid amounts of power or have more money than sense, or both.

Eon, is pretty much the cheapest gas ppm provider, edf do a discounted rate on ppm until sept 2012 I think the unit rates charged are 2.5% cheaper than their standard ppm unit rates. After Honda2ner's praise for ebico, it is worth pointing out that ebico, being a small concern set their pricing at low usage households, their unit rates for gas and electric are the dearest pretty much in the market, just due to lack of forementioned standing charge, or tier one unit rate, they are to be avoided if use more than 3000kWh elec and 15,000kWh gas

    Hi nuttyp

Currently, our prepayment prices are very similar to our standard rates. However, prepayment customers aren't eligible for discounts for paying with a Monthly Direct Debit or managing their accounts online.

It's possible to request a change to a credit meter to take advantage of these discounts but we operate a fairly stringent policy on this including credit checks and the insistence of a Direct Debit payment arrangement for usage after the meter change.

There's also a charge to change meters. This is currently £51.06 per meter.

To see how we compare and the other options open to you, I would pop your details on to one of the comparison sites.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction nuttyp. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

Every tariff I have ever seen on a pre payment meter was extremely expensive.
Get rid of it, and change to a normal meter.

Dont talk such rubbish. some people cannot afford the luxury of a credit meter..
How on earth can you not afford something that is cheaper than the other option?

Not everyone can budget so prepay may be dearer but they can't run up a debt. Horses for courses.

Then I make the same suggestion to you as I make to everyone.

    Consult a comparison site. :)

You will see, generally, today they are roughly on a par with the suppliers standard rate, although one or two may even be less :)

Some people may find it difficult to get credit for a number of reasons.
Even where granted, there may be an approx charge of £50 plus a security deposit may be required that would typically be several hundreds of pounds.

Furthermore, having unlimited credit may well result in a consumer using more energy as they don't get to see the bill for 3-6 months (or even longer if estimated)

And those "standard" rates are amongst the most expensive in the country and could be 20-30% more than another tariff from another supplier.
  • WAIT til all the companies have risen prices. or go with a plan like the 1 mentioned above with 2.5% lower than standard (but not knowing what their standard rate will be, it could still end up more than other companies). I know sse WERE good for prepay gas (no standing charge or high primary unit rate), not sure what they are doing now since they announced the rise.
