Ford Mondeo ignition problems.

Hi, I have a 2001 model ford mondeo and for some reason the key is just refusing to turn, i had problems before with this but now the key is refusing to turn at all. When it does turn the car starts no problem whatsoever. The two keys both have trouble so i don't think it can be the key itself. Does anyone know what the problem is? It would be greatly appreciated.

Is the steering lock refusing to disengage?

I'd suspect either the ignition barrel or the steering lock. Does it help if you rock the steering wheel gently whilst trying to turn the key?

I was actually rocking the steering wheel to try to get it to start and it was working on occasion but im getting nothing now. I suspect it will probably be the barrel. What would you recommend me doing? taking it to a garage or is it simple to change it myself?

No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thought.
Only after the last tree has been cut down. Only after the last fish has been caught. Only after the last river has been poisoned. Only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten.

if you remove the cowling round the steering column you turn the key and push the button in to release the barrel from its housing (assuming it hasnt got an anti theft cover plate over it like some transits)
if you can do this and take it (the barrel) to a decent ford dealership they can rebuild you a new barrel to your key
or you could fit a good s/h barrel with key and have the chip swapped over from one spare key, this means one key for door one for ignition but be aware chips break easily if you do this yourself

suggest ask dealer how much for new barrel build as first option,i would expect under $50 all in and you fit it
