Home CCTV

Hi,

After a recent bizarre garden theft where someone made off with just my sprinkler and ignored the patio furniture, and apparently made no attempt to access the shed which contained a petrol mower and two decent mountain bikes I have started to consider installing some basic CCTV.

Can anyone share any experiences of a camera which:

  • Is an IP Camera - I have a home server running which could be used to monitor/capture from the network.
  • Can do night vision at a basic level.
  • Is small and isn't going to make my house look like alcatraz.
  • Doesn't cost hundreds of pounds.
Thanks,

Beastface

best to get a small package that includes a camera a receiver and an sd card for recording movement
i bought one for £100 from maplins m,they are now £90
remember if its dark and you cant see then no matter how many little ir leds on the camera it wont see either
you need to spend more to see more
obviosly cheapest way is a ir light fitting with a nice healthy output so you can see next doors cat etc when you replay anything through your computer

what i recommend isnt ip but will do a good job

If you have a machine running 24x7 then a CCTV camera + capture hardware solution will be cheaper than an IP camera which start at ~ £60 for low end models.

The IR leds on even cheap cameras make them work in total darkness over a limited distance.

Finally other than being able to watch stuff going out of your garden after the event exactly what use will a camera be?

Get a Foscam external IP Camera for around £60.
Curently using 3 of them at home.
Once setup and configured they can be viewed from anywhere.
    Search Google for "gadget victims"

reading above helped me out a lot :)

You can buy 25 metres of barbed wire for around £15. Particularly effective when hooked up to the mains (be sure to use a transformer though, so that you don't kill 'em).
