Just returned from two weeks in the Paphos area of Cyprus. We were lucky and didn't suffer a single power cut while we were in our accommodation. In fact, the only evidence we saw of cuts was that various traffic lights were out and there were generators running all over the place. All the supermarkets and shops we went into had their air-con turned off, presumably to reduce consumption. Otherwise, it seemed business as usual.

Business as usual in tourist areas, yes. Most non-tourist areas are experiencing one or two (or three on a bad day) 2.5 hour cuts a day.

That may be true but the tourist areas are probably most important to readers of this forum. I should also add that we spent little or no time in our accommodation during the day so there may have been power cuts that we were unaware of.

True, but it would be a great pity if tourists had the incorrect impression that the problem was resolved and, as a result, inadvertently stopped being cautious with their power usage.

To be honest, I don't think the vast majority of tourists had any idea that there was a power problem, let alone what caused it. It certainly wasn't mentioned to us by our accommodation supplier or anyone else while we were there although it was the main topic of discussion on the local radio stations. However, we did try and cut back as much as possible by turning off lights etc, and we only used the air-con in the bedroom at night.

The problem affects the whole of Southern Cyprus to a greater or lesser degree. The Cypriot government is keen to minimise the effects on tourist revenue so there seems to be less (or no) cuts in the touristy areas... at the expense of everyone else.

Everyone is expected to economise on power though so it is likely your parents may be affected in some way or another.
