Wireless card update...Help

Wondering if anyone could help me.....I have had a new Samsung RV510 laptop for 6 weeks now and it keeps dropping the internet signal, I have been onto the virgin help line many times but it keeps doing the same...they also sent me a new d link router with no luck.
Anyway Virgin sent a man out and it was the same....as soon as i moved down stairs from the main p.c. the signal went......I live in an old 3 bed victorian terrace.
He even replaced the new router with Virgins latest combined Hub/modam/router with no luck.
He said it may be worth replacing the wirless card as the one in the laptop was not the best.
Can any one tell me what card i should be looking to get, and should i go to a shop to get it updated or is it easy enough to do yourself...:(

Have you tried just changing the wireless channel on the router? It may be conflicting with a neigbouring one on the same channel.
Download and install InSSIDer to check.
Or it may just be that the structure of your house prevents adequate signal strength, in which case a set of Homeplugs is possibly the solution.
I wouldn't trust the opinion of VM on this, it's what you'd expect them to say at this stage.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

They have been tru every situation possible....on my old laptop a hp i never lost the conection in the 2 years that i had it....he says as my router/modam is at the back of the house upstairs by my p.c. it will be the the walls and the bathroom that will be the fault....he said my old laptop must have had a good wireless card in....hence the reason i am asking about an upgrade.

You cannot upgrade the card to anything meaningful that will magically make it all work. What you can do though is buy a wireless access point which you can place on the ground floor and connect it to the main router via a cable. That should give you ample coverage over the rest of the house.

You haven't answered the question about changing the wireless channel. This is nothing to do with VM, it is a simple check that you can do yourself in 5 minutes. If it doesn't improve things, it has cost you nothing.
I would not assume that VM have done anything meaningful other than change the router-even that was beyond their brief, as connectivity beyond the modem/router is not their responsibility.
