car insurance - claim amount

When doing quotes on comparison sites and directly from car insurance sites, it ask for a claim amount (or how much did the insurance pay out), or other similar wording.

Do they mean the claim amount paid to the other party, or the claim amount that I was given?

Was in an accident a few months ago, which is my fault. I was on third party insurance, and can't claim back cost to repair my car according to my insurer. Had to use my own money to fix.

I'm confused.

I would assume it would be the ammount your insurance paid out to repair the other parties car, the cost to your car is irrelevent because you paid for it.

It is the total amount paid out by your insurers. This would include any damages to any vehicles, other third party property, injury settlements and investigation costs etc.

Your insurers will advise you what their total claim cost was.

My insurane aleady told me the claim cost, which they paid to the other party.

On price comparison sites and car insurance sites, that field is optional (i.e. it doesn't have an asterik next to it, which means compulsary field), while others do. When it's optional, and I know the claim cost, do I really have to declare it? :o

You can try both but when it goes through to buying the insurance you will have to see what the insurer has in the field (if they have such a field). If you do not provide it the insurer may make an assumption of what it is (say £7,500) and enter this into the field but you are responsible to ensure that all details, including their assumptions, are correct.

The price comparison site I just used, the claim amount field is optional. When clicking on the purchase button, it links me to the insurers site. I then checked the insurers site, and the claim amount field is blank. When I put the claim amount field in the price comparison site, and click on the purchase button it links me to the insurers site, the claim amount is in there. Insurance was a bit more expensive after putting the claim amount. :(

If that field is left blank at the insurer's website, I'm sure the payment will go through and the paperwork will be generated and sent to me.

If I don't declare it, I'm sure they won't put a random amount in, or ask me for it.

Not sure if I want to declare it. It's not they will ask for it (I think). Please clarify before I do anything.

By the way, I did declare my accident though.

What is ultimately of importance is what the insurer asks you not the aggregator. If they allow the purchase to occure without you completing that field then you SHOULD be ok.
