hacked emails and the law

where does someone stand legally, if their emails have been hacked? Is it possible to hack an email from a separate PC? Is there a program that is capable of this.

Cheers

There is no 'program' which does this. You need the skills, understanding of security and internet protocols, and the mindset to circumvent them to even start thinking about this.

It isn't like in the films :)

In terms of the law, if caught you'll be subject to the computer misuse act.

Easiest way of hacking is by 'social hacking'. Get as much info on them from face book et al, such as date of birth, name of pets, first school, mums maiden name. All info people freely give out on their profile!

Amazing the number of people who have a hard to guess password, and then a security question asking what their favorite football team is. And a lot of people use same password for a number of sites. Just a quick password reset and jobs a good'n.

Tell her to change her password, her backup mail address (if she uses one) and her secret questions..... And to use things that he won't guess.

It's highly unlikely that she's being 'hacked' but he's logging in using the right password.
If she has a backup email address to mail the password to if she forgets it, then he's probably got access to that. If her secret questions are "what school did you go to" and "what is the name of your dog", then it doesn't matter how many times she changes her password as he can easily reset it / access it.

and tell her to use a password that isn't as easy to guess as her kids name or happy123

Ask her to check her email forwarding settings. If I was a hacker that would be the first thing I'd set incase the user reset their password.

Hacking email is illegal under the computer misuse act and RIPA.

You should not be asking how to do it on this forum.
