Laptop screen blank

  • Does the grey happen as soon as the power button is pressed? Have you checked to see if the laptop is under warranty? I don't know about Sony, but warranty information can usually be garnered from a manufacturer's website using the products serial number which will be visible on the underside of the laptop.

One test would be to try switch the laptop on with zero removable parts (remove the battery, the hard drive, the optical drive and all RAM modules). Plug in the AC and switch on the power, and see what happens. Grey light or nothing? Then install everything and test after each installation in this order: optical drive, battery, hard drive, RAM modules.

Forgot to say about the light, sorry, Switch on, dark screen, little tune thing, screen lightens to grey, internal chuntering, fan comes on then nada. Twice yesterday it did actually have pictures & let me log in but only after it had been running for about half hour, today it wouldn't even do that.
Am off to find instructions on removing hd etc, I may be gone some time lol.

It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!

I have a Sony Vaio (quite old) and had a similar problem where my screen would just go black.

To fix I did the following:-

    1. Power down.
    2. Take battery out.
    3. Hold the laptop on button down for 20-30 seconds and then let go
    4. Put battery back in
    5. Power up

Its worked for me a couple fo times, although I think my battery is on its last legs anyway.

    Hope that helps.
  • I have a Sony with a similar problem. When you say take the battery out, are you saying there is a battery on the laptop or do you mean the one that you plug it into that is connected to the mains. Can do it with that battery not experienced enough to undo back of computer and follow some the instruction already mentions. will have to find a techie locally
