Have you looked at https://www.kids-pyjamas.co.uk ? They have character jamas at great prices - you could say something along the lines of 'I have seen the pyjamas ds wants, for only £x, but they are online - how about I get them and you can pay for them?'0

I used to buy my Godsons 'character' PJ's when they were little, their Mum used to love it as she couldn't afford the expensive ones herself and they were always pleased.
Can you or your mother-in-law sew? Just basic sewing - the reason I ask is because one year, my Godson's Mum was after a dressing gown with a certain cartoon character on it, but couldn't get one anywhere (they didn't make them). I bought a plain dressing gown from Primark, then tracked down a sew-on badge from a haberdashers and sewed it on the breast pocket. Bingo - a customised dressing gown for not a lot of pennies. You could also try one of the 'iron on' badges if you're no good at sewing, as long as the dressing gown can be ironed, of course!
Also, keep an eye out for the gift catalogues that arrive at all times during the year. I bought my 6 year old God daughter Barbie PJs, embroidered with her name, for £7.50 last year! She was beside herself with joy and thought Barbie had made them personally for her! :TMortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:0 -
one of those torches that you wear on your head. my youngest (6)loved it.he had it on his head all over xmas. it did mean we had to have the lights off most of the time tho.it was £2 from netto. i dont think presents need to be dear but it is difficult to find what hits the mark for kids. ie wrapping paper /carboard boxes/balloons/crayons often give them more fun than adults realise but we think we have to get the latest crap fed to us off the telly!0

I think your boys are just going to have to live with Granny's PJ's as older people often think along practical lines. My MIL used to buy DD a mixture of poundshop tat and clothes and fill a sack to try to outdo FC. We just made sure DD from a young age kept smiling and saying thank you - even if it was a china doll on a wooden seat with plastic flowers decorating the swing ropes:rolleyes: I thought we had done a good job as she would smile and say thank you - until her 3rd birthday. Granny had bought a cotton smocked dress with a pretty white collar from M&S for DD for her birthday. My sister was there when she opened it and said "oh that's pretty" DD said "it's not, it's horrid!".
We all tried to laugh it off, saying "tell it how it is, don't hold back" etc but she never bought her clothes again! It's taken a few years but MIL no longer buys the tat from poundshop either. She gives us £100 and asks us to get the present which annoys me a bit because there is no thought then in her present. It drives OH mad as his mother hasn't bought him a present for over 25 years - she just give money. Often I don't spend all the money but put some in DD savings account. This year Granny 'bought' a guitar amp, leads, and PC game!
Anyway one cheapish suggestion for you Granny to buy that the kids would love is a Cinema outting. She could either buy them tickets for a film or they could all go together over Christmas. A 99p selection box and an outting would be great for them all and might start off a Xmas tradition.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
