"Capacity Problems"

MSE's International Call Checker has been the best thing that ever happened to me as I have family scattered around the globe and it has enabled me to maintain regular 'phone contact at a sensible cost. However I have found more and more that I can't get through on various numbers - I get the message "unfortunately due to capacity problems we are unable to connect your call". We used to get this problem from our NTL line, but it did not happen with our BT line. Thinking the problem was with NTL, I recently transferred the NTL line back to BT and took the number with, but the problem is still there - it seems to be attached to the number itself. Does anyone understand how this works - and - more to the point - is there anything that can be done about it? Thanks

Welcome to the MSE forums mrmemi.

I refuse to use gateway providers because you start paying halfway through dialling (when you finish dialling the 11 digits of the 0844/0871/090 gateway number).

Although they may be (normally slightly) more expensive, I never get the 'capacity' problem with 18185 (and never did in the past when I was using 1899 and/or 18866).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
