Greece and the islands.

For some reason even though Ive travelled quite a lot I have never been to Greece or any of the Islands.
Im was hoping to go in October as a surprise for oh's birthday and wonder if anyone can recommend anywhere. Ideally I would like a nice self catering holiday, somewhere near a beach but also in an area where there are plenty of places to eat out and streets to wander round. My oh is disabled and although he dosnt need a wheelchair, ideally he needs somewhere flat and easy to get around. I would prefer somewhere more 'quaint' than 'Benidormish'.
I have also heard that some of the islands are difficult to get to get
to as you have to take a ferry from the mainland so I would like to avoid that and have the travel as minimal as possible.
Thats my wish list, thank you.

Have a look at Rhodes Town in Rhodes. There are some SC apartments in the Old Town area which is amazing and has restaurants and bars and is quite flat. The Old Town itself is a walled city and has many old cobbled streets to get lost in. Rhodes Town also has a nice harbour area where you can watch the world go by and even get a day trip to Marmaris in Turkey.
I would initially say Lindos in Rhodes is better but unless you can find an apartment at the bottom of the village, it may be quite difficult for your husband to navigate the hills and slopes. If you can find one, have a look at Lindos, it is beautiful.

I have just come back from Pefkos on Rhodes, although it is aimed at the British it is very nice, there are enough restaurants and bars for a good choice but it is by no means rowdy - the resort mainly caters for young families and middle aged couples so the louder elements are missing, there are some hills so you would need to check the location of your hotel as you will need one beach side of the main road (I say main but it's really quiet as it only links one side of the resort with the other ) the Island Blue hotel may fit your needsproud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0

We stayed in the Kassandra Apartments nr Trianda in Rhodes two years ago and had a fab time. It's in a quiet area but not far from Rhodes Town. However, not sure how suitable it would be for someone in a wheelchair. I'd check out Trip Advisor/Holidays uncovered if I was you once you've spotted somewhere you fancy.
Good sites for Greece are:
Olympic Holidays/Direct Holidays/Thomas Cook
First Choice/Thomas-Cook
Hope this helps.0 -
As it's October when you are planning the trip the further south you go the more likely you are to be guaranteed good weather and not too chilly at night - plus a lot of the smaller islands will be winding down for the winter by then.
I would suggest Crete.0 -

I went to Skiathos years ago and that was gorgeous, easy to get around to as only small, own airport.
Would love to go back one day.0 -
Skiathos will be virtually closed in October, I would agree with Crete, I love Elounda but maynot be suitable as quite hilly in places, however the views are stunning.Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!0

Well can't disagree with the Rhodes recommendations.
Absolutely love the place. Lindos is a beautiful little town, but as your OH has difficulties getting around, I'd defo scrub that off the list. But it is a simply beautiful place. We got married there at the little chapel in 2005.
Pefkos is a good shout and is far better to get around.
Rhodes Town is the more built up area and flat also.
