Can the council give a bad refrence to my new landlord

I am currently trying to move property due to the council’s total disregard to environmental health by allowing me and my partner to live in cockroach ridden flats.
I have had a few complaints made against myself in relation to music since I have lived here but nothing actually done will this affect my chances of moving and can they give me a bad reference

This is the information I got from my previous LL (who was a live in LL so we were more like lodgers - which may be a slightly different situation though)

References are only in relation to if the tennant pays their rent on time, has caused any damage to the house, defaulted on payments etc. It is not about what they are like as a tennant/housemate, if they play loud music, cook smelly food, leave their underwear on the bathroom floor etc...

Unless the police have been called because of your music I doubt the council will mention it in your references. Your new LL should not be interested in anything other than if you pay your rent on time and keep his house in a good state.

You're right that LLs want to know whether a T looks after the rented property and pays the rent on time but many *will* also want to know about complaints of anything that may amount to "antisocial behaviour". Playing music that is loud enough to generate several complaints from others living in the area is likely to fall under that heading.

However, where a current LL is happy to be getting rid of a T they may be less forthcoming on any issue that may result in the T not being offered another property to move to.

Probably depends on how well the LL knows the housing dept people ... there's a few "surprisingly close" relationships out there .. eg to exploit, possibly fraudulently, HB/LHA...

You ask "can the council..." - well yes, of course the "can".. (cf I CAN drive on the M8 at 110mph... but the Police will tell me I MAY not.. )

stay where you are before you spoil someone else's quality of life...loud music that has to be complained about tells me you do not give a hoot about other people..stay put..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
  • The complaints were found to be not true as u proved I wasn't even there at the time of the complaints but it just worries me that it could still go against me because it was a formal investigation :/

If it was proved it wasn't you, you have nothing to worry about.
