Gas meter location or move

I've an existing gas meter under the stairs. It looks a bit like a lollipop on a very long pole
(i.e. situated in a really silly place).
I wanted to 'drop' the gas meter so it's near the floorboards. However, I've been advised that to alter it, would require completely resiting the gas meter outside, and having a big box on the front of the house (which I do not want).
I thought that it is a requirement for new builds only to have new gas meters sited to the outside elevations, but alterations to *existing* gas meters?
Please would someone advise?
many thanks

Unless you have a very good reason to move it leave it be! The words "extortion" "daylight" and "robbery" spring to mind.
Yes, I agree. Although I'd like the extra space that comes with moving the gas meter to outside, can anyone confirm that even *existing* meter alterations actually now require a total re-site?0 -
It's probably fed with old Iron pipe work. They will want to replace with a modern 'plastic' service, hence renewing it all from the street and putting it out side.0

Hi (by the way, how apt is your name!). Yes it is 32mm (I think...) metal pipework. I think for the purposes of cost, I'll leave it where it is.0
