Virtual phone number for business

Hi

I'm posting this here because I'm not sure it fits on the Home phones' Phones discussion board. I run a social enterprise with a friend & at present we use my home phone number as the contact number. But we may move before too long & we don't want to invest in lots of publicity including an out of date number. We'd also like the ability to redirect the number to each other's phones fairly freuently (so that we can take turns answering calls) and ideally a number that had a separate answerphone would be great.

I have read lots of the posts about VOPI phones (I use Skype but onlyu via a Webcam so I'm a bit clueless about this area) and other virtual numbers but they seem to offer something different. Can anyone help?

You can get a free 01/02 one,no line rental or connection fee, from www.sipgate.co.uk comes with free voicemail, choice of exchange, and reasonable divert rates. You just pay for the cost of diverted calls.

Never heard of sipgate before, thanks. Was thinking of maybe getting a Skype number but this seems like it could be better option. I'm trying to get people to email as main (ideally only!) method of contact..but work in progress.

Sipgate also e-mails you when voicemail message left.

If the cost of diverting to mobiles is a problem these people https://www.net-telco.net/ will provide a free number as long as you use it every month, and there divert charges are cheaper.

EG: 0.9 peak, 0.5 evenings, and 0.4 weekends to landlines and 4p a minute to main UK Mobile Networks.

When using any VOIP or VOIP like provider you need to do some digging into their routing. Some very cheap providers achieve it by bouncing the data all over the world to get the cheapest route.

For UK mobiles from a UK VOIP provider I would hope that it isnt an issue but when we looked to switch from our current provider to a slightly cheaper one, for calls to South America, I was amazed that the route the cheaper provider was using had 78 nodes compared to the 4 of my current provider - naturally each node is a point of potential failure or delay so the more the higher the risks.
