Slow keyboard - any suggestions please

I am having some problems with my computer. Whats noticeable now is that the keyboard is slow (I type and the words appear a few seconds later) , the mouse is doing the same thing - ie if I try to scroll - left click hold down and move down the edge of the page it doesn't respond straightaway. (Very basic mouse - as I have young children who were breaking anything decent) I can't click into documents etc very easily either. I have run AVAST (and AVG for a particlar trojan) defrag, removed cookies, cleaned up everything I can think of - not very technical mind! The only thing I haven't checked is the registry which someone on another thread suggested - an unknown area for me so I have held off. Can anyone help at all? I have also run a spybot prog. Nothing seem to show up on any of these and there is plenty of capapcity left on the computer.
