Windows Media Player crashes PC

Can anyone help please?
Every time I even visit a webpage that has a video on it, Windows Media Player starts up automatically. Which never used to be a problem except every time now, without fail and before I cancel close the page or ANYTHING, the PC freezes. The mouse won't work, ctrl-alt-del won't work - nothing at all. The only thing I can do is reboot and that is getting really irritating.
It never used to do this, it started out of the blue a few weeks ago. Does anyone know what I can do please?

Thanks for the reply culpepper. I tried downloading the current one, and it didn't help. I also can't find the facility to uninstall the old version - or indeed any of it. I would disable it if I could but I don't know how.0

have a look here - Media player is a part of windows so not an un/installable programme .. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/installation.mspx
And has this advice :-
A. You might have difficulty installing Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP on a computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 if you have not installed the most recent Windows updates.
If you encounter problems installing Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP on a computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, try installing the updates mentioned in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
• Article 900325, "Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005"
• Article 925766, "October 2006 Update Rollup for Windows XP Media Center Edition"
In addition, go to Windows Update and install any other recommended updatesRich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.0 -
Do you have 2 instances of windows media player after installing the newer version? You might need to associate the files with the newer version if so, so that the older version doesn't open them by default.
You do this by finding a file on the Pc which usually opens with the player and right click then choose open with and choose program at the bottom of that menu, then choose the one to open it with.0 -
The same thing happens even with Real Player, so it can't be a Windows Media specific problem.
Does that mean it is due to my graphics card?0
