haha, you'd think that, but if you've called I imagine you'll find out they haven't. For tax credits you have to give an estimate of your income for the year - it's usually based on the prior year but the SMP will confuse it somewhat, but just tell them the facts and they will calculate it.
Child benefit is a totally different dept, you have to complete a form and send it off along with the birth certificate. You can probably get them online or maybe from the post office (you should have got one at the hospital as well in the Bounty pack). You normally can't claim for tax credits until your child benefit claim is established. I think they can be back dated up to 3 months, but don't hang about.
CB is £20/week for the first child, usually paid 4-weekly.
I'm not sure what the threshold is for CTC now, the Tories have reduced it, it used to be as high as £80k for 0-1yr olds iirc0
