Do you own a company and have you done this?0

I had a job once where a friend of my OH was part of the management team.
Nothing was said to me but I always felt that I had to prove myself continually, if only to justify my position.
I never took advantage of the friendship (tbh I didn't know he worked there until my first day) and it did have its drawbacks - could never fake a sicky (not that I would) and could never have a moan about the OH !2014 Target;

Look after your family and friends first and the word of a close family member in regards to an applicant carries more weight than some facts on a bit of paper sent in by a complete stranger.0 -
It used to be the defacto way to recruit even in big companies
But then most people did not move around much
Applications had a section where you listed the family/friends already working for the company and what your parents did
If they are good better chance of a job, bad maybe not.
Now it is called networking people follow people through word of mouth even when there may be better out there.
Thats why it is important to not burn bridges and keep in touch enough for the time you need work.0 -
When you hire someone from a pile of CV's, it is always a risk, no matter what their work history and references say. A personal recommendation always scores higher.0

It depends on whether you're thinking it's a personal recommendation or downright nepotism! The latter can happen however they can't just hire and need evidence to back them up in case another candidate has gone for the same role and been turned down. The former can be helpful when you have two candidates who have both performed well at interview and you can't decide - this is when a good reference will distinguish.0

Years ago quite a few companies would guarantee the offspring of existing employees an interview, sometimes even a job.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Two ways of looking at it:
There can be an assumption that 'likes attract' so if the person already working at the company is hard-working, reliable, diligent, a generally good employee, many employers will work on the assumption that there is a high probability that their friends and family will be like-minded individuals and a 'good' employment risk.
On the other hand, the Equality folk don't really like this method of recruiting as it tends to encourage the continuance of a 'less diverse' workforce. ie. If the company traditionally has a high incidence of one particular demographic (be that ethnic or otherwise) group, and uses personal referrals as its main method of recruiting, then that demographic group is likely to continue to be the predominant group in the workplace, with other groups perhaps not even being aware that vacancies are available.
Personally I don't particularly agree with either view, but that does seem to be the way it is.0 -
Don't really see this as often anymore but i've worked for companies that had 'recommend a friend' schemes, once you had recommended them if they got the job and completed the probationary period there usually was a bonus added to the wage of the person that recommended them.0
