Slow PC any suggestions please?

I have been a broadband user for a long time & recently got a 'home hub' which is connected wirelessly to a single PC. As part of the 'deal' and because I thought AVG wasn't going to be free any more I changed to Nortons Protection Centre. It now takes ages (10 minutes at least) before I can access the internet. Can anyone please tell me why it should be so slow? and is it likely to be Nortons? or the wireless home hub? that is causing the problem?
I haven't added any other new stuff and I 'defragged' just in case it helped but have 61% unused!
I am not very confident with hardware/techie issues so please if you have advice make it suitable for a 'blonde'!
Thank you

  • could you elaborate a bit more? errors etc
  • I'm no expert but the "ask Jack" section of the Guardian website contains advice on slow-running computers which I found useful:

Hello, thank you both for replying I will try 'ask Jack'

Nadeembutt, No error reports come up, it just takes for ever. I get the desk top page in normal time & then click on the internet icon & wait & wait. It wasn't this slow before. I have tried to look if the wireless connection is OK (from the icon on the taskbar) & it shows 'exellent' or similar. Sorry If it's a bit vague.
  • In internet explorer, click tools, internet options, connections, make sure "never dial a connection" is checked, click on lan settings, and make sure everything is unticked.

If that doesn't work, you could try turning off the norton firewall temporarily, to see if that is the cause.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
