MegaBus (they do trains aswell) you can pick up some very cheap bargains, only 1 train per day, but the prices start from a £1 each way.
Birmingham New St to Edinburgh dep 06:19 arr 10:21
Edinburgh to Birmingham New St dep 18:52 arr 22:55Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

Just seen your post and a quick check on Megabus shows most tickets sold out in July, what stations in the West Midlands can you travel from?Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

Ok, first have look for your chosen date in July for any cheap Advance tickets but if the cost of the Advance tickets 'there and back' is more expensive than the Off Peak return or the split fare below, then avoid (would also avoid if price is close as you loose all flexibility with Advance tickets)
Another option is split tickets and buy day returns, (off peak if possible) if Stafford is Ok for a start station?
Stafford to Crewe
Crewe to Wigan
Wigan to Preston
Preston to Edinburgh
Should knock around 1/3ish of the walk on price. Just make sure all trains you catch call at the split stations

No, via the normal rail network and if your buying online then get it from a Train companies' website ie East Coast or Virgin trains. As these don't charge fees.
Or if you've got some Tesco clubcard vouchers then exchange them for use at Redspottedhanky.com (£10 clubcard = £30 rail vouchers)
Or just go to your station and ask for the tickets.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

Well if you can commit to a date in August, then get over to Megabus now and get some of those bargain tickets.
Oh, forgot to say Megabus don't do Saturday or Sundays:o and remember it's Birmingham New St to Edinburgh Only.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0
