Claiming tax relief for professional fees

I have to fill in an online self assessment form for the first time. I am entitled to claim back membership fees for two professional bodies I have to be registered with, but I cannot see anywhere on the form to enter the information. I believe I can claim three years' fees, but even this year's would be a bonus.
Could anyone point out to me where I put this in, please?
(I tried ringing the HMRC help line but my phone did actually run out of charge while I was waiting!)

Why are you self assessing? Is it because you are self employed or are you an employee? Have you considered filing online - it is much simpler?
You probably need to get tax relief on previous years' fees separately.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

It is online. I have to do it because for a short while I got some rent paid to me, and I am an employee. I think this is the only part of the form left to fill in.0

On the presumption that these professional fees are relevant to your employment, then you need to find the Employment page, which looks like this
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/sa102.pdf
and stick the relevant number in that box that says 'Professional fees and subscriptions' under the heading 'Employment expenses'.
There's a list here - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/index.htm - of those professional bodies recognised by HMRC for these purposes.
Assuming that the subs are allowable, and you paid them in previous years, but haven't got relief, then I imagine a letter to the relevant tax office might do the trick and get you a repayment.0 -
Thank you for that. Found it ok using your post.0
