I know how you feel, mention Access and people bury their heads in the sand, even take data from a table in Access and copy and paste it into Excel and work on it daily, rather than writing a very simple query once!:beer:Member #8 of the SKI-ers Club
Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
SO true
I use Excel for my monthly stats as no one understands Access and they all get scared of it.0 -
That was hilarious!0

Ooh, thats good.
I am so grateful I have a manager who knows that I know about computers, and she doesn't, and so left me in peace for a week to build an access database to take over from our shared excel spreadsheet that kept doing things all on its own!
New version works like a dream, I just wonder how long before IT catch on and either say we can't use it or that everyone in the whole company should!0 -
Hummm. When I first started with my existing employer (two years ago) the "only way" of getting data from the "Time and Attendance" and Payroll systems into Accounts was to print reports and then manually re-enter into various spreadsheets. Needless to say it was time consuming and inaccurate.
Took a few weeks to settle in and write data extract routines (without telling "them") and then after a few weeks revealed how come I suddenly had so much time on my hands .........
Other projects have arisen and are pending.0 -
Ha ha, I love this one! I have seen the battle from both sides as I used to work in marketing and am now developing stuff but its so bad when people haven't got a clue, our HR team used to have all their records on a spreadsheet, and car number plates etc.... Why make life difficult for yourself I ask? Its odd people are so allergic to Access as it can be used in pretty much the same way as excel if you just wanna type in a table but you can run the odd query on it (hmmm - very useful!)
Is it just access people find or are people allergic to PowerPoint too??Official DFW Nerd 210

Once worked with someone who used powerpoint to do all his documents instaed of word.
Also worked with a guy who thought ecel was "Just to make number look tidy" and would still manually add up totals . We did get him onto a calculator , but when asked if we could ad a summary sheet for him so all he did was input numbers , he threw a paddy and stormed off0 -

DR. BENWAY: Emergency call coming in.
POWERPOINT AUTHOR: I didn't hear it.
DR. BENWAY: Its on vibrate so as not to disturb the lecture.
POWERPOINT AUTHOR: But it has now.
DR. BENWAY: Very likely but there's no time. See you next year.
:TNURSE: "Shouldn't it be sterilized, doctor?"

However, BAD PowerPoint presentations are sooo painful!!
I think the worst ever presentation has to be where someone types up a slide, prints out a handout, then reads word for word off the screen, when you could have just read it yourself!! 2nd place has to be when they try and do lots of fancy effects and stuff comes in letter by letter or flying left and right!!
Or... a mess of colours and lots of text that you just can't read...
Here is Mr Gates demonstrating what NOT to do while trying to explain the Live strategy!!
and again with a boring demonstration of boorring bullet points... ha ha
Oh, and one last use for PowerPoint...

I didnt use Access until my current job. Then I found people wanting to know purchasing figures for the last year, and would go off to accounts, when we had in right in front of us. Started to get the hang of using it. Not everyone seems to think I'm some Access whizz that knows how to do anything. I can only just about figure out relational databases using the wizard !!!!!!, let alone doing stuff manually! I guess people only learn something when they realise how much easier it makes their job.

I am leaving Powerpoint until I get promoted and need to do fancy presentations to someone.matched betting: £879.63
