granite worktops-limit to length?

I have a 2m (ish) length of worktop in my kitchen, on the opposite wall to the main kitchen units. It currently is laminate, attached to the wall with l shaped brackets and there is one upright panel on the length-there are no cupboards here-the fridge, dishwasher and tumble dryer sit underneath.
I want to redo the kitchen, and we are considering stone or granite worktops-would it be possible to fit them in this style? Or do they need to solid carcass underneath them to help support their weight?

Also is there a limit in size of cut out possible for a sink? We currently have a 1.5bowl stainless steel sink with drainer, and I would like similar.
We have the straight section as I mentioned, then an L shape, with a gap for the cooker in the middle (freestanding cooker) not sure if this makes granite too much of a faff?

You're going to need some better support, but I guess you knew that anyway. We have had customers do similar things to thia by making steel frames to support that granite.

As a rule of thumb a single appliance is fine as long as there is support both sides. Two appliances side by side and I like to see a support panel in between them plus support either side of the machines.

Any more than that is not sound IMO.

The limit is goverened by the type and colour of granite chosen, the type of cut out, the position of the cut out and how the piece of stone has to be handled to be moved into final position.

    Thanks,
I think that pretty much rules out granite for that bit anyway-we don't have space for an extra support panel :( I'm not sure I want it, but OH does. Maybe corian would work....

more or less same guidelines for corian I am afraid. Maximum unsupposed overhang is 300mm so one appliance space with supports on either side.

    Oh. Pants :(
Does that leave us with wood or laminate then? Or do those rules apply to all worktops and we've just been lucky so far?

You could look at one of those companies who supply granite covers which you fit over the top of your existing worktops. Cuts down the weight a fair amount I should imagine.

I think Granite Solutions is one but there are more I'm sure/
