DG Window Handles - Key Lost

Options
Good evening all

My former tenants have lost the keys for my DG windows. One of the handles is locked and cannot easily be replaced.....

....unless any MSEers know a cunning way to remove the handle without resorting to drills and angle grinders!

:)

do you know the manufacturer/ fitter. I have had one new DG window fitted, I asked the fitter why the key had no number and he said therre was only one key that fitted all their windows.

Does the handle cover the fixing screws in the locked position?

  • No key for double glazing is the unless the maufacture of the handle is the same if know what i mean. Most dg companys will sell you handle for a few quid.

To open the handle is easy just lift the handle up with a bit of force and the inside of the handle will snap as there only cast iron. The handle will still lock the window but not with the key.

Then unlift the plastic cap and undo the 2 screws and take in to your local dg company for a new handle b&q sell them but expect to pay £20 + for it.

get a key from any other windows you have (any property) and with some canny wigling you shoudl be able to open it, if your not to worried about damage to the lock you can try a fork / small bladed knife, and if you cant get the lock to release you should be able to slide a thin blade between the handle and mount plate and pull the handle up (be carefull)
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

  • I had a quote recently from Anglian for new windows and I did ask them what would happen if a key was lost and if it was easy to replace. They told me they keep a record of serial numbers of keys/addresses and can easily replace lost keys for a few pounds on request. If you can find out who supplied the windows you might be best going enquiring of them first before trying to force the lock.
    Good luck.
  • most upvc window handles can be unlocked with a small flat bladed screwdriver as the keys are universal in most cases.
