Share dealing

I am trying to sell some shares on the Toronto stock exchange,please can anyone advise me of a broker or bank in this country who deals with this? This is a one off transaction.

Are they certificated? If so you will struggle to find a broker who will trade them that way - you will need to lodge them into a nominee account. Most mainstream brokers could offer this but be aware the lodgement could take a number of weeks before you can sell.

If they are not held certificated either sell them with whoever currently holds them or transfer them to another broker - again any mainstream broker would be ok.

I live in the UK, though I have family in Canada. I trade Canadian stocks regularly in a nominee account with TD Waterhouse. Their system is works well for me, though they are not the cheapest on-line broker around.

If your shares are on paper certificates, I would ask TD Waterhouse for their advice. I know that they have a facility to transfer in UK share certficates into their nominee account. Once in the account you can then sell the shares immediately, and then close the account. Howeever, I don't know if they can do this for Canadian stock. If they are unable to help then you may need to pay a broker an hourly rate to process the shares for you. It shouldn't be impossible, but it could be expensive.

If the shares are already in a nominee account then you should contact the manager of the account, whether they are based in Canada or the UK. Should be straightforward to sell the stock, but be prepared for the payment to be delayed if the manager is based in Canada and they need to confirm your identity.
