Citibank - cannot transfer money

My mother has had a Citibank account for nearly 3 years which she accesses via the Internet, but she hasn't accessed it for well over a year (maybe 2).

She now needs to withdraw the funds from it (funds needed urgently) yet after she has keyed in the amount to transfer she gets the error:

"The account number you've entered has not been recognised. Please check it and try again, ensuring you've removed any zeros from the beginning of the number."

This happens on the existing linked account and she has been doing this from her home computer (I live over 100 miles from her).

She has phoned Citibank but simply cannot understand the accent of the Indian call people, so she's getting nowhere.

I've tried phoning on her behalf but they won't talk to me, except to say that her account hasn't been accessed for some time, hence the reason she cannot transfer any money. Apparently they need to talk to her, yet she cannot understand them!

It's SO frustrating!

Is there any number that my mother can call to speak to a person with an accent that she can understand (she's hard of hearing too, hence her difficulty with accents).

Or is there a number that I can call?

It's utter madness that Citibank have locked her out of transferring her own funds, simply because she hasn't used the service for over a year!

    0800 919080 gets you a 'voicemail' service in the UK. You can leave a message asking to be called back.

    This topic should be called "my mother can't understand english", but not "Citibank - cannot transfer money"

    As no transactions have been done on the account for over a year it seems that it's been made dormant by Citibank and therefore not accessible online. She may need to go into her branch to get it reactivated as it's possible she may need to prove her ID.
