Gas reading well behind

I have just checked my elderly mothers Gas meter reading and to my horror have discovered that it is approx 1000 units (£1000) behind. I have no idea when it was last read (if at all) but it must be an awfully long time ago. Just wondering how to deal with this. Should the Gas company not have insisted on being able to read it at some point?.

Do you know that they haven't come round at any point ? She might have missed the meter reader or binned the cards they left.

Gas meters should be read every two years for safety reasons.

If you are stating that 1,000 gas units is £1,000 then it is an Imperial meter.(measures in cubic feet). Are you sure that this is the case? i.e. could it be a metric meter?(measures in cubic metres)

Is it the old 'dial' meter - if so that is easy to mis-read as the pointers move clockwise and anti-clockwise on alternate dials - you can easily be 1,000 units out.

Lastly have all the recent bills been based on Estimated readings?

Actually it does measure cubic feet, its not a dial meter. All bills have been estimated.
