If courts were involved, there will be some official paperwork somewhere... I would start with the adoption officer at the lcoal authority for the area they were living in at that time.

If a guardian is still alive, then presumably the name of the birth mother is known .... did she leave any paperwork behind ?

The chance of success then may depend on how unusual the mother's name is ..... and of course there is the possibility she is no longer alive. Anyone considering contacting tracing birth families should really discuss these issues with an adoption counsellor before embarking on the process.

Sorry, I've just seen you've made some additions.

The courts involvement was only limited to an attempt to gain consent from the birth mother for the child's change of surname but as they were unable to trace her, they allowed the change anyway.

Yes, the name of the birth mother is known but very little seems to be known about her; what type of paperwork would be useful?

Part of the reason the child wishes to now locate his birth mother is because the more time that passes, the higher the likelihood that the birth mother is deceased.

Then the first step is get a copy of their own birth certificate .... until they have that, not much is going to be possible.

The Norcap site does have an option to regsiter for contact (which does need both sides to be involved), but there is lots of other info and advice on there.

EDITED: Hmm, having read the difference between a long and short birth certificate, it would appear that I am mistaken, and the child has in fact seen the full birth certificate.

With the mother's maiden name you should be able to trace her birth. Once you have her birth, it's simple to see if she had any siblings. You can also trace her parents' marriage (assuming they were married) and you'll be able to see if the grandparents had siblings. There may be living cousins, even if the mother is dead.

    OK.

    So they know:

Their own date of birth, birth name, location.
The name of the mother and where she lived at two dates (birth and before she disappeared).
The name of the grandmother (mother's mother?) and her approximate date of death amd location.

From this little lot it should be possible to tie down quite a lot about the mother and at least do a search to show if she has already died, whether she married and/or had further children.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
