Any advice Please….
My mother (73 years young) has a BT home hub internet, her direct debit payments have tripled and she has to pay approx. £100 a month to service the cost of her calls.
It seems that somehow someone has managed to hack or use her BT Broadband Talk phone line. She didn’t even know she has another phone line.... I have done a little research and found that the calls made have mainly been to the Birmingham area. Although she lives 150 miles from Birmingham. My questions are:
1. How is this possible?
2. Has anyone managed to recover any costs from BT and what is her position to do so?
3. How common is this? I have searched the internet and can’t find any occurrences.
Thank you.
Mark

What do you mean by 'she didn't even know she had another phone line'?
Were the extra charges billed to her 'normal' line? Does anyone else have acccess to her phone(s)?
A short term fix (until you can get to the bottom of this) would be to switch her onto Anytime, so that all calls to landlines will be inclusive.
For older people at home all day this is generally the best option anyway for a fiver a month.
Have you tried ringing the numbers billed for to get some more info?
Edit: sorry, upon re-reading I'd missed the significance of the VOIP service. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Broadband Talk is a voip service included with BT broadband. I guess it's possible that someone elses number has been associated with her account. You should be able to see the details of the BB Talk number and it's status by logging on to the router. Does this correspond to the number she is being billed for ?0

It could just be that her router is insecure and someone nearby has accessed it and her BT Total Broadband VOIP line.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

You can use BT Broadband Talk anywhere. You don't have to be at home. Change the password on the BT website and secure it. I have a laptop with BT's Softphone installed and the laptop rings whenever anyone calls me no matter where in the world I am.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
