Claiming Mileage on Volunteer Work?

Hi All,

Wasn't sure if this was the right board but thought it would be worth a shot!

I've made some enquiries with a (semi) local wildlife rescue trust about myself and my partner doing some regular volunteer work there. I wondered if you were able to claim a tax deductible expense on the mileage getting to and from the sanctuary? I've done personal tax at both AAT/ACCA level but never from the point of view of a volunteer and the HMRC site only seems to talk about business mileage.

It's not an overly big deal either way but thought it would be worth asking the question

I wonder if the answer is here? Although that seems to apply more to people who volunteer as drivers.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by a tax deductible expense, however. We pay our volunteers mileage if asked (most don't) at the approved HMRC rates, but we have limits so that if someone wants to volunteer with us who lives 30 miles away, they know in advance that they can't claim the full mileage which wouldn't be sustainable for us.
