Blinds or curtains to keep the light out?

My bedroom has heavy lined curtains but the light comes in round the top and sides. I'm sick of waking with the dawn chorus! The curtain pole is part of the problem. So many of them stand too far off the wall.
I'm redecorating now so maybe time to fix it. Should I swap the curtains for blinds or maybe have both? Or perhaps look for a better curtain fittings. Anyone else had this problem?

What type of window do yew have as you could fit either a blackout blind or slatted blinds.0

Hi,
what about one of these,0 -
you can get blackout blinds in argos. They're not completely effective, having a wider gap on the 'chain' side, but fairly good.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

If you are feeling really flush you can get the quick fix blinds(they do a black out one) that literally slide between the window glass and frame which means there is no gap for the light to come through0

Ikea do them and you can cut them to size may be awkward if your windows opens inwards.0

having suffered from sleeping difficulties for ages, have invested in black out blinds a couple of months ago. superb! sleep like a log.0

I would recommed blackout curtains, best purchase ever.0

Moved into a house with pelmets. They keep the light out and the heat in ... I wish they'd come back into fashion ...:o:) Plus thick lined curtains.
I found that blackout blinds were great at first but seemed to wear thin after a while, unless I just got used to seeing in the dark! Wooden blinds are probably best although I do keep one of those eye masks handy and they help me get back to sleep. Now I just have to do something about those damn birds! The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Dunelm mill sell black out curtains we have them on every bedroom window . The kids bedrooms are dark at 7 and it would be dark enough to sleep in at anytime of the day.0

I bought blackout blinds but have them recessed into the window fitting. What a mistake! The light seeps through the sides as there has to be a gap for the mechanism at the top. On reflection if I was to get more I would fit them on the outside and attach velcro to the wall and the blinds so there was no light seeping through.
TBH though I find it nice to be woken up by the natural light in the summer. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0
