Can't hear sound on new 30GB iPod

Any suggestions to help me rectify my mum's christmas present?
When I go to main menu and selct song, I hear nothing, the time doesn't change (so am assuming that the song isn't even playing!) and then the back light flickers and the picture of the apple comes up. This has happened about 20 times and have not heard any sound whatsoever.
I have reset the factory settings and am about to reinstall the software again but am thinking it is the actually iPod unit and not the software. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The same song causes this problem or every song? The Ipod can reset if a song file is corrupted (happens most with podcasts IMHO).0 -
it's a different song that I choose everytime. They aren't podcasts but songs I have copied on to iTunes with the aim of getting on to her iPod.
