Linksys router not connecting

Hi

I have a Linksys router WRT54GL which i was given to use as part of a broadband speed monitoring service. This has now stopped and the router is mine to use as I wish.

However I cant seem to log on to its homepage. Tried 192.168.1.1

The router powers up and the DMZ light and ethernet light comes on ( cable attached from PC to router ) so it seems to be working.

Im thinking the software thats on it for the trial may be blocking my attempts to log on to it.

Does anyone know any way to reset or update firmware when i cant log in.

From memory (I had one for years) a reset involves pressing the recessed reset switch, count to ten, remove the power (while still keeping the reset switch pressed) and counting to ten again.

The IP address of the router may not be 192.168.1.1. The best way to check is to run the IPCONFIG command from your PC and look at the default gateway address. This will be the address you need to put into a browser.

As for rebooting the router, its very common for routers to stop providing the web interface. A smple reboot should fix it. It might also be taht you get a network login prompt and your IE security settings are set to 'Anonymous Login'. Its rare, but I've seen it before.

There are two ways to reset the Router's factory defaults. Either press the Reset Button, (on Rear Panel) for approximately five seconds, or restore the defaults from the Administration tab - Factory Defaults in the Router's Web-based Utility.

IMPORTANT: Resetting the Router will erase all of your settings (Internet connection, wireless security, and other settings) and
replace them with the factory defaults. Do not reset the Router if you want to retain these settings

Make sure you know the PPOA username/password to reconnect to your ISP before you do this! Sometimes these are pre programmed. It can be a frustratingly long support call to them otherwise!!

Thanks for the suggestions howevre none seem to be working.

Think it may just be faulty
  • I used to have one but it never recovered from being turned off one day.

Assuming you don't have a pressing need for it to work (you have an ISP supplied router as well) there is a well developed alternative software community for it and Google will find you some instructions on how to load various firmware to the unit either the "stock" firmware or alternatives.

I've got a feeling though, that yours might have broken like mine did.
