Naples / Sorrento advice please

My kids are really keen to see Pompeii, Capri etc. so would like to plan a trip there.
However we are on a tight budget.
I've looked at going there by train (Eurostar to Paris, overnight sleeper Paris to Rome, high speed train Rome to Naples) but this is more expensive than flying. Can anyone advise on cheap ways to get there, including cheap flights? (from any UK airport)
I know Italy is expensive, but I am looking for somewhere cheap to stay, preferably with breakfast although that isn't essential. It can be in Naples, Sorrento, Sant Agnello or anywhere in that area.
Requirements: Room for four, clean, safe area. We don't mind youth hostels, bunk beds or lino floors! (We stayed at the excellent Stayokay in Amsterdam and were very happy with that).
Can any experts on the area advise? Many thanks

Not sure about hotels - but have been to the region (stayed in posh places though, arranged by someone else). Make sure you see Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian) as well, it's as impressive as Pompeii.
There is a train called the Circumvesuviana, which can get you to most places of interest and you can buy a book of discounted tickets - here's a link: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/Azienda.
Boat trips to Capri can be arranged easily from the quay at Naples - make sure, once there, you climb all the way to the top and see Emperor Tiberius's villa - tough work but worth it, and there's a nice little restaurant halfway up.
Naples itself was fine, but a bit seedy - you might be better-off in Sorrento. I'm sorry I can't offer hotel advice but I hope you have a BRILLIANT time! Wish I was going with you!

Budget airline flights to Naples, all travelling with your own hand-luggage if the kids are old enough to pull along their own bags, would be my recommendation.
The direct bus from Naples airport (bus-stop literally just outside the terminal doors!) to the centre of Sorrento is fine for transfers. Cheap, convenient and a some lovely views along the way!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I've read that a "hostel" in Italy can be different and more hotel-like than our GB interpretation of a hostel is. I think I read somewhere in the case of the link I've put below, that was something to do with planning rules or similar. Anyway, last time I was in Sorrento, I met someone who stayed here cheaply and was very happy. She said it was like a smart hotel, that was being run as a hostel! The location is excellent. Haven't got time now to check it out thoroughly pricewise for you , but thought I'd mention it as worth a look

Naples,be careful,it can be very dodgy.Italian breakfast are a waste of time imho, usually a dry pastry and bad coffee. You can usually get the same, well better,in cafes and bars which are everywhere.0

Be warned, do not stay in Naples at the moment, there has been a rubbish collectors strike for months, the smell is dreadful and some parts of the area are now infested. A friend retruning last Friday moved hotels, at their own expense, as the rubbish was four feet high next to the hotel. Sorrento is lovely but its not a cheap destination at all and costs in Italy tend to be higher than in other euro-using countries.0

I def. second using this as it's easy and cheap and staying in Sorrento is awesome - beautiful location and easy to get around in the train. The direct bus from Naples airport (bus-stop literally just outside the terminal doors!) to the centre of Sorrento is fine for transfers. Cheap, convenient and a some lovely views along the way!Thank you all who post.0
