Best way to sell motorbike on Ebay

Hi!

Need some pointers in the right direction please. :)

OH plans to sell his motorbike and is thinking of using Ebay. We used to use it a lot but it's changed so much that we really don't know the best way to approach this and also don't want to fall foul of any of the Ebay rules.

He's thinking of putting it up for 'Buy it Now' and may, possibly, advertise it elsewhere.

I'm a little reluctant on the Ebay route, favouring the Friday Ad or something similar that doesn't tuck you up with lots of 'rules' and charges.

So, any ideas for the best plan of action?

Thanks in advance.

Sold a bike and countless cars on ebay, no problems. Might be worth doing an auction with a decent starting price, but if not, have a look at a classified listing (never used them so cant comment.) Just make sure you only accept the same payment methods that you would accept if you were selling it in a paper (cash is always good, paypal, no no no).

Choose one place to sell and give it a chance before going multi option with ebay. The problem with ebay is that if you sell through them after you have sold it elsewhere you will be liable for all their fees and probably end up with a neg and non performing seller complaint.

    Thanks for the replies.

Which is the most economic way to sell it? Classified, BIN or Auction with reserve?

    TIA

I have sold a few bikes on ebay, I always use the £14.99 BIN with best offer. You get 28 days this way and people are free to view the bikes within this period. No one has ever spoilt an aucion by buying it and not paying because the make offer button always has them making an offer first. I then explain that if the offer is accepable to me I will only accept the offer through ebay after they have viewed the bike and everything is acceptable to them.
You can stop silly offers getting to you by only allowing an offer you would be happy with to get throughin the settings, any offers under your minimum are rejected automatically.
I have tried auctions but had a few people either not turn up or pull out because they wanted more off the price, this is a hassle and getting fees back is a pain in the a**.

Being the member of a biking family and having bought and sold bikes on Ebay, its an excellent way to advertise your bike.

We always start at our lowest acceptable price, no reserve - keeps fees down to a minimum tha way.

Regarding payment methods, cash is definately preferable, but it can be difficult for people to take out a large (dependant on tyoe of bike obviously) with short notice.

As an example, I am currently looking for a new bike, saw one I really liked and was willing to pay the BIN price for. However, the buyer wanted cash on collection and collection within 2 days. Impossible for me to do so, so I missed out on my dream bike and the seller missed out on a genuine 100% feedback buyer.

I guess you just have to be sensible about it:D

The ones that I avoid are the "paypal deposit payable immediately"
Can't see that stopping a bidder who's not serious though.

Ask them to leave a deposit and driving license, then if the do I runner you have there name and address
If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.

Don't accept payment by Paypal - insist on cash only. The following thread is a long one but is the aftermath of someone trying to deal with a scam where they sold a motorbike and took payment by Paypal. They lost the money and the bike.

    http://www.thewholesaleforums.co.uk/forum/payment-and-shipping-discussion/82937-suing-paypal.html

I can't remember the exact details but it was either a hacked Payapl account or the buyer opened an INR (or both).

Of course this applies to anything being sold where you allow collection.
