The PIN on your phone is so it can't be used if you were to lose it. Phone hacking is done by accessing your Voicemail so you need to change the PIN there. There will be options when you call. You will need to refer to the 'help' from your Network provider.

Sorry, I meant the Voicemail PIN
  • When you phone up from your mobile to your network using whatever number they have given you (my o2 payg uses 901 as the number to call) you should be given various voicemail options, one of which is to change your PIN.
When phoning up from the mobile the system knows that it is your mobile phoning to access your mailbox so doesn't ask for the PIN to access the voicemail box

However when you phone up your mobile number from another phone, while the voicemail box outgoing message is playing you press some key on the phone (depends on the network) it then stops the message and asks you to put in the PIN - after accepting it your are then allowed to get access to your mobile's voicemail box remotely.

As stated above this is how the "hack" was done because the wassocks didn't change their pin from the default of 0000. So the journalist rings the mobile, gets the voicemail outgoing message, presses the access key (probably # or *) and then enters 0000 and.....surprise surprise gets access to the voicemail box of the mobile concerned.
Of course if the journalist actually gets the victim answering the mobile they hold them on the line while an accomplice rings the now engaged mobile and it diverts to the voicemail which is the objective of the "hack"....
Bit like leaving the keys in the ignition really
