DDR Compatibility

I have read on a website - pretty reputable by all accounts - that my PC takes DDR PC3200 RAM and that it is backwards compatible with other DDR.
What I can't find anywhere is what the disadvantages are with using backward compatible RAM - I can save a small fortune using it but what effect will it have.
What are the differences between PC1600/PC2100/PC2700/PC3200?
Also what is DDR2?
I have a HP Pavillion with a Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz Model 4, Stepping 1 CPU. 2 slots (1 empty, 1 x 256MB).
Many thanks.
