I didnt want to install anything to my C: just incase it knacked my XP install up.
Not quite sure what you mean when you say tell it to install to C : but tell it to use D : to put the actual files on?
If I choose C : as my install then it won't ask me again will it? It will just install everything to C :0 -

Your Linux installer will replace the MBR to point away from theWindows Boot Loader ( which is kinda knackering your XP but will give you options to boot Linux or XP ) to point to the new LILO
try the BIOS switch.
Or edit your boot.ini http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2006/05/08/dual-boot-laptop.html?page=last this is for C drive so try
\UBUNTU.BIN="Ubuntu Linux" But I still think you need the LILO/GRUB to be able to read the EXT3 filesystem ..... unless u try fat32
This is how to uninstall from a slave drive http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2867.htmlRich people save then spend.

Hi,
I'm an Ubuntu user too (Edgy, with Beryl
).
I recommend you post your question over at https://www.ubuntuforums.org (the official Ubuntu forum) and maybe https://www.linuxquestions.org too (if you can't find the answers already on their forums) - their support community is excellent and they've solved every problem I've ever thrown at them!
Hope this helps

Hi T4i
As wyzeone says above, ubuntuforums have the answers but...
If you already have XP installed on SATA1 C drive then there is no need to create an NTFS partition on SATA2 D drive. Just let Ubuntu have the whole 80GB of SATA2 (for now). While Ubuntu is installing it should search round and find your XP then create the GRUB.
By the way, is your SATA just 1 disk divided into 2 partitions or is it 2 separate SATA disks?
The other way to overcome your problems is to use same method as acc above:-
Leave your present XP installation untouched on SATA1.
Set your BIOS to boot from SATA2.
Partition SATA2 40GB/40GB.
Install XP again in first 40GB partition.
Then install Ubuntu in second 40GB partition with its GRUB.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
w00t!
Cheers people, always guaranteed a 'fix' on ere
.
I basically started again from scratch, deleted all the partitions on my SATA2, loaded live CD, created a 98% partition and formatted to EXT3, created a 2% linux-swap.
Step 5 out of 6 looked different from all the other times i've tried. Asked me where to save the '/' files to, and same for swap. Ticked the format buttons and clicked go....
At the summary screen it mentions GRUB which I have to be honest I did not see before, it said GRUB would be installed to HD0 (my ATA pri master)
So restarted and booted from HD0 and i got the GRUB screen.......ubuntu and XP works a treat.
So if I want to boot Linux I can just press F9 @ POST, select HD0 to boot and use GRUB thereafter, and it will still boot XP as my default OS if I don't press F9 @ POST.
Cool, just updated it all, needs reboot!
Now I just gotta get my head round it all.0 -
That sounds good T4i, next stop ubuntuforums

If you ever decide that you prefer Ubuntu you will be able to rearrange that bootup routine to make it your default.

Congrats T4i
I did post a link above on how to remove and get back to just XP -
but basically it is boot from XP CD and run fixmbr to get your XP mbr back - HTHRich people save then spend.

Cool,
Once you've got all that working properly, install Beryl, it's got even better graphics than Vista!
Here's the instructions for Ubuntu 6.10 (the version I presume you've just installed):

Any problems PM me

It's still quite buggy though. I always find some of my startup apps don't show, and it crashes every so often when ending the session.
How do you find AIGLX? I use XGL."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
