Whats the best method of saving digital photos

I stored images on to a DVD disc but it took ages to load, if that is usual then CD disc are probably better suited.
If you upload them, make sure you keep copies as sites can close without warning as happened to me, despite paying an annual fee, or they may be unavailable just when you need them0
