Holidays for singleton...

Apologies if someone has already started such a thread but I couldn't find one.

Ok, so I'm a singleton and wanting to travel to various places around the world, this year I'm going to New York and Edinburgh and next year going to Phuket. Whilst I don't mind travelling alone perse I do find it expensive and it can be lonely. I don't plan on travelling alone for ever but until I find someone to share these experiences with I don't have a choice.

I know there are sites such as Just You travel but they seem to be very expensive - I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences of travelling alone and how they have done so and who through?

Any information anyone has would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance

I had one of my best ever holidays alone - backpacking round Australia. Loads of solo travellers there, staying in hostels there was always someone to talk to, discuss the best places to see, even travel around with for a bit. Most were there for a year or so but I only went for a month (actually 3 weeks plus short stops in Asia on the way out & back). The hostels are excellent too - not like the big dorms you tend to get in Europe, usually rooms for around 4 people who you get to know pretty quick! Not all young people either - plenty of retired people.

The only time I was lonely was a night in Melbourne when I decided to stay in a hotel for a change...

Of course if you want 5 star luxury - then you're likely to get lonely!

I'm another one who recommends hostels. Love them. I'm doing Hong Kong/Oz/NZ/Singapore this year and can't wait to stay in the hostels and meet lots of cool people.

When I split up with my ex I went to Edinburgh as my first trip alone and stayed in a hostel where the room mates were lovely and very friendly. I've also been to New York, where I did appreciate having some company, but it could be done on your own if you are confident. My friend did it and booked a hotel in a nice area and did spend some evenings in with the tv, which is no hardship as you'll get plenty of exercise walking around all day. It's not that it's unsafe to go out alone, just that if you are shy it can be hard. I found a weird language barrier with others in New York, there's an old quote that we are separated by the same language.

I found that asking people if I could join them was nerve wracking but worked really well and I did the organised litery pub crawl in Edinburgh which is a good way to get talking to people.

The huge advantage is that on your own you get to see everything you want to see.

For the first time ever I am doing the same this September. My partner and I split a few months ago and I really could do with a week in the sun after my youngest has gone to uni so bit the bullet and off zante for a week in Sept.

Think I am a bit old for hostels, don't fancy backpacking and I like a few comforts! Also an early bird and love to soak up the sun (yes bad for you i know) and people watch, read and listen to music on the beach. Not everyones type of holiday i know but suits me!

Bit nervous about doing it but should be nice. I ended up doing it all sep, booking flights and accomodation direct as seemed to get stung less financially with costs. Looking at the specialist tour ops it was really expensive, even the package hols we stupidly priced!
Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!

My last trip to Vegas was spur of the moment, booked it on the Thursday flew on the Sunday. Usually go with a few people, I'm not daunted by travelling self contained and was pleasantly surprised by the freedom it actually gave me, not hanging around waiting, doing stuff, sorting out where to go, where to eat etc. Seemed to fit in a huge amount more than I usually did, met up and socialised with some nice people and pretty much pleased myself.

Good travelling with friends but also flying solo was I found a low stress experience, will do it again. Fortunately it was no more expensive for me as I got some great deals and comps.
