Find a cash machine that doesn't charge a fee for taking YOUR money out .0

It doesn't matter which shops or what ATMs you use abroad you still get the same good exchange rate - Nationwide give you the industrial rate, used by the banks and Visa themselves, rather than the poor Bureau de Change rate.
Though, as the other post said, don't use ones that will charge you... not that I've ever come across any charging ATMs abroad.
Make sure you opt to pay in the foreign currency, and not in sterling! When I was in Spain this summer, the girl at the checkout told me (in Spanish) that by paying in Sterling I got a better rate, but I kept pressing her to do the transaction in Euros. "No, quiero pagar en Euros por favor"
Might be a good idea to work out how to say "I want to pay in <insert native currency here>" in your destination's language before you go on hols!0 -
When you pay in the local currency, you are being given the exchange rate shown at this Visa website:

(Enter 0 in the fee box)0
