Short term car insurance help please

Hi

My 19 year old daughter is off to uni in mid sept and not taking her car with her (she intends to sell it) however her insurance runs out the first week in august.

As she is working right up to when she goes to Uni she really needs her car (no decent bus service here!) and her insurance company is looking to charge her £480 for 5 weeks insurance!

Are there any companies that anyone can recommend that will do a short term insurance or are there any ways around it?

Thank you in advance

Remember you can cancel insurance policies mid-term (if you haven't made a claim that is).

It might be cheaper shop around, take out an annual policy and then cancel it when its no longer needed. I think there is often a charge for this which will vary between insurer - probably best to check first and read the T&C's before taking out a new policy.

How much is a full years insurance? Buy a full year and let it run its course? At least she will earn a years
    NCB.

The quote for the full year is just over £900 - too much for a student and I can't help her sadly!

Will check out the terms and conditions for policies, so far all of them want a minimum of 50% of the annual charge - seems a lot and pretty harsh for 5 weeks motoring!!

Just wondering if I can do anything on my insurance?

50% upfront isn't uncommon but when you cancel the insurance you should only pay for what you have used pro rata + the admin charge for cancelling, so you should end up with a refund if you are only using the insurance for a couple of months.

Go for a full years insurance paying monthly. BUT the main question you need to ask is how much is the cancellation
    fee and any extra charges.

You maybe better of going with a company that will charge £1500 a year than one charging £900 after cancellation charges & fees
    have been taken into account.
