Unknowingly Bankrupt

Taunted
I moved to Dubai 2 years ago, and left a few debts in the UK, one of which was with a solicitor, who promptly made me bankrupt for the sake of a few hundred pounds.
Well now I'm coming back to the UK, I'm going to need some sort of currrent account, I don't want to be credit scored (yet). Has anyone a suggestion as to which bank does this?
I'll also be bringing some £50k back with me (via withdrawels in the Uk from my Dubai account, or via Dubai cheque).
I have a feeling I'm going to have some problems, I know it's not a usual request, I don't own property or anything like that in the UK, but does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

The Halifax cashcard account is a good one for poor credit ratings but your problem could well be proving your identity under money laundering rules. You will need to take your passport and driving licence plus every other piece of official looking paper you can find. NI number would be a good idea.
As for being bankrupt. Thats an interesting one. I think you are probably facing several thousand in fees. If I was you I would not bring that 50k over until the Bankruptcy thing is resolved. Was it bankruptcy under the old rules? So you are not yet discharged? You simply must talk to an official receiver and find out where you stand right now.
I've not come across this before so I'm guessing, but I suspect you can get the bankruptcy set aside as you were out of the country and did not recieve any court paperwork. You had better have a chat with a solicitor ASAP.

I've got my passport, with Dubai residency stamp in etc. etc., so i can prove i lived here (Got contract copies etc. too). I don't want a credit check done on me, I've found a place to rent, as long as I give them their 6 months up front and show my passport then that'll be OK!!
The ankruptcy was taken out last May (2005), can i talk to any official receiver? I have no idea which one took it out on me - I only heard this through basically word of mouth.
When i return I wont have a job there so, theoretically will be in no position to pay big bucks to solicitors etc. can I come up with an agreed figure (say 20%) of the total value of all debts (about £10K total) and, providing they agree, can I then be discharged that way.
Oh and finally, I'm only planning on being back in the UK for 6 months before another expat trip beckons.
I wonder is it worth it, or should I just use my Dubai account and feign no knowledge!0 -
Really depends how often you'll be back here. You should have already been discharged from bankruptcy though I guess it depends on any restriction orders, etc. Aside from this your credit record wont be much better as you will have defaults, etc, registered against your name, and they will be on there whether you're bankrupt or not.
I guess it depends a)how much difference it will actually make to your credit (and whether you need to actually use any credit facilities), and b)how long you will be out of the country again. If you are not going to be in the uk much over the next 5 years then I would just let it run off your file and save your cash.matched betting: £879.63

If your in debt by 10k and you have 50k in Dubai, how about paying off the whole 10k and having a clean slate ?

you wont have a clean slate though - the defaults leading up to the bankruptcy will still be on the credit file.matched betting: £879.63

Just a thought
I've no inteest in buying a house or running up any more credit in the UK, so I may just pay everything in cash, no UK bank account!
As you say, just a thought!!0 -
You can search by name to check if you are still bankrupt by searching on the insolvency website, its https://www.insolvency.gov.uk or similar.
If you are no longer bankrupt tall your debts including the solicitorsd will have been wiped out.
You can open a basic banl account with Coop or Nationwide, you will get internet banking and a debit card.
