MSI Wind U135DX (XP Version), Keyboard Typing Strangely

Thanks to HUKD, I bought an MSI U135DX (XP version) netbook for my mum about 3 months ago. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/refurbished-msi-wind-u135-10-netbook-160gb-now-only-pink-available-129-99-delive/900259

I also got a Kingston DDR3 1GB RAM to add to the machine, taking it up to 2GB total (there's an empty memory slot). http://www.box.co.uk/Exclusive_Price_with_Free_Delivery_-_Kin_1068479.html (verified on the HUKD thread as working).

However, upgrading the RAM on the MSI isn't as easy as some (my Samsung NC10 had a little flap which unscrewed and took a matter of minutes!). This one, you have to take the entire chassis off.
http://www.laptopmag.com/advice/how-to/msi-wind-ram.aspx?step=1

I had barely used the machine as it's mum's and I don't live here. Anyway, after a while it became apparent that the keyboard was verrrry slow at typing (literally one character per second, infuriating).

Now, a few weeks down the line, the right-hand side of the keyboard is typing numbers instead of letters. Eg, Hi = h5
How are you = h6w are y64
pronounciation = -r6n64nc5at556n

I've tried checking the keyboard language settings, making sure Caps Lock is off, System Restore (it won't let me), running various malware/virus scans, selecting default settings in BIOS. I'm at a loss.

Thinking the keyboard is faulty? There seems to be mixed opinions about whether breaking the warranty seal on this netbook causes problems, warranty-wise.

Any ideas or advice would be very welcome! :)

That seems to have done the trick..wonder how on earth I managed that. It's Fn + Ins on that netbook! Thanks.

Thought with the keyboard being sluggish (seems OK at the moment) that it meant it was faulty.:j

Nice machine. Got one for girlfriend. Haven't upgraded the RAM yet as although MSI say it doesn't affect the warranty, D&J Henry say it affects theirs. Perhaps that can be tested in court. :)

There is another good, though undocumented thing about the machine...at least with mine.

Yeh, the RAM upgrade/warranty seal issue is as clear as mud: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=141829.0

According to that link, you have to ask MSI's permission first, and the warranty is safe, as long as there's no damage done after you open it up.

Another says, "In Europe the sticker isn't valid as warranty seal. EU-law forbids this."

Best to contact MSI to make sure. I, er, didn't.

You can overclock it too I think? Something to do with the "turbo" settings.

    No, it's something else. ;)

Apart from that, as I wrote before, the problem is not with MSI. It is D&J Henry that claim the warranty is broken if you install RAM.

Thanks, stilltheone :) Interesting, though mum is comfortable with XP..and I think it's a bit zippier on a netbook.

Hm. There's something strange with this. When I boot up, this types nice and fast (bear in mind this is mum's and I hardly use it). I've noticed this typing really slowly before.

The link seems to be, when I use something RAM-intensive (eg, Spybot scan), the keyboard resorts to a one-character-a-second crawl.

Even when the RAM-intensive activity is finished, the keyboard lag remains.

I've rebooted and typing speed is back to normal. Any ideas?

I haven't used her Netbook myself, so no chance to replicate it. What anti-virus solution are you using? Have you checked the Task Manager whilst it is happening?

I did earlier, before I rebooted (Task Manager) and it was only System Idle that was at 60% or so, everything else was negligible. I use Avast Anti-Virus on here, CCleaner, Zone Alarm Free, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, Malwarebytes, O&O Defrag.

Obviously Windows Updates and regular scans are done (by me) to keep things up-to-date. Mum really just browses the internet.

It's overloaded with security/defrag software, dispense with zonealarm, spybot, and o&o defrag

    post a hijackthis log

and when the keyboard goes slow, try removing the battery

You mean, take Zone Alarm off and switch Windows Firewall on? I've listed my software from my desktop before, which is similar, and the only criticism was about TeaTimer and Malwarebytes Protection Module (neither of which are on). O&O was previously deemed fine.
